Finding Love With a Fixer Upper!

All of us are fixer uppers!

I love the home improvement shows that help people find and get their dream home through a fixer upper.   Those shows are interesting as they go from house to house until they decide which house they are going to demo to get their desired results.  Some houses are hard to see getting better, others are easier to imagine.  Either way, when they are done, there is a home renovated that looks like it was built especially for them!

When looking for a house, of course they  have to have a budget first.  That is what lets you know what you can or cannot afford to change.  Then you may look at the location next.  For the actual home, they  need to see if the basic needs are there or can be added.  Meaning if I need four bedrooms, does this house have the space already or is there land or room for it to be added?   If I am set on this particular house, I have to then ask myself harder questions.  Can I live and function with just three rooms?  I can continue asking myself questions like,   If I want an open concept, can this be done or not? Are there any walls that cannot be removed or can I afford to have a header removed?  All the details and décor are not most important at this time, but one thing we know is necessary to check the condition of the foundation and the layout.  Without this, your fixer upper maybe a flop.

THE FLIP

When it comes to relationships, all of us are fixer uppers!

Even with new life, we require some work to be our best.  So how do we choose a fixer upper?
Regardless to all the fine finishes you want, the first and most important thing you should look at in a life partner, is their foundation. What holds them up?  What is the basis of who they are?  If you overlook this area, all the fun and creative things you put into it are always at risk.  Take time to check the foundation while stabilizing yours as well.

The next thing we think without realizing it, is whether or not there are things we want to change.  This works well with a house, but the costs may be more than you can afford!  Changing people is always risky, you never know what is beneath them.  Meaning, what is holding them up.  It is best to view people AS IS and not try to renovate them.

Saying all of us are fixer uppers, is not meant for us to look and try to fix others.  It just means that none of us are perfect.  We have things we need to fix in us, and being with someone who accepts us and can be relied on to help us as we seek to be better, is the best thing to find.   If we can work on ourselves, understanding that though we are priceless, we still need what it takes to meet the needs of others.

Curb Appeal

Most of us would not be drawn to a house with no curb appeal.
We would look at it, and drive right by. So when trying to sell a house, you have to pay attention to the way it looks on the outside.  Taking time to groom the grounds, plant flowers or trim hedges is part of the process. It also includes how the actual house looks. Is the paint fresh, are there elements of the house that may need repair?  Is the roof in good shape, do the outside lights work, is the entry well lit and are windows clean? We ask these questions when thinking about selling a house because those are some things people will look for when planning to buy.  Anyone would tell you that curb appeal is important.

THE FLIP

We all know and understand the need for curb appeal.  For a house, if you are selling, there is NO way you would fix up the outside and leave the inside a mess thinking that the outside alone will sell the house. At least not unless you plan to sell sight unseen and as is.  We understand that no one is looking for a house that only looks good on the outside.

So with that in mind,  why would we do that with our ourselves?

We buy clothes that flatters us and make up to enhance our features. We change things to make us look better and appealing to others.  But why spend so much time and money, cutting our hair, waxing, trimming, coloring and changing things to make us look great on the outside, and leave the inside untouched?

Curb appeal draws you to a house, but what's inside will determine if anyone desires to stay. Why look good on the outside and overlook the area where LIFE happens?

The bible says:

But the Lord said to Samuel, "Do not look at his appearance or at the height of his stature, because I
have refused him. For the Lord does not see as man sees; for man looks at the outward appearance, but the Lord looks at the heart."                                                                                                          1 Samuel 16:7

It is good to consider how we look on the outside, but don't forget, people see and judge much from the outward appearance, but  God is paying more to what is on the inside.

Take time to renovate your mind and work on the part of you that counts the most...the inside, then your overall appeal has substance.
